SESSION 9001 SOLUTION R-EVOLUTION SERIES

What is PERMACULTURE?
a wikipedia definition

The word permaculture, coined by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren during the 1970s, is a portmanteau of permanent agriculture as well as permanent culture. Through a series of publications, Mollison, Holmgren and their associates documented an approach to designing human settlements, in particular the development of perennial agricultural systems that mimic the structure and interrelationship found in natural ecologies.

Permaculture design principles extend from the position that "The only ethical decision is to take responsibility for our own existence and that of our children" (Mollison, 1990). The intent was that, by rapidly training individuals in a core set of design principles, those individuals could design their own environments and build increasingly self-sufficient human settlements — ones that reduce society's reliance on industrial systems of production and distribution that Mollison identified as fundamentally and systematically destroying the Earth's ecosystems.

While originating as an agro-ecological design theory, permaculture has developed a large international following of individuals who have received training through intensive two week long 'permaculture design courses'. This 'permaculture community' continues to expand on the original teachings of Mollison and his associates, integrating a range of ideas of alternative culture, through a network of training, publications, permaculture gardens, and internet forums. In this way permaculture has become both a design system and a loosely defined philosophy or lifestyle ethic.

This weekend's session of the 6th annual Permaculture Design Course Series featured world renowned Permaculture Designers and Educators - Scott Pittman and Larry Santoyo.

A Back to The City Movement...
The Los Angeles Permaculture Guild has one of the largest and most dynamic City Permaculture groups in the world -who now work beyond the garden to bring sustainable solutions to city planning, community activism and more.

Scott Pittman, President of the Permaculture Institute USA. has over 20 years experience in Permaculture Design, has taught and worked on 5 continents with the founder of the permaculture movement, Bill Mollison. Scott has designed and instituted permaculture projects from the Russian frontier, the civil unrest of Haiti, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, rebuilding of Southeast Asian villages to the shamanic hilltribes of the Andean Highlands. www.permaculture.org

Larry Santoyo, Vice President and Field Director of the Permaculture Institute USA, Founder of the LA Permaculture Guild and Director of the ecological planning firm, EarthFlow Design Works. L. Santoyo is an ex-lawman (and outlaw!) has 30 years experience in natural building and sustainable landscape construction including 20 years experience as a Permaculture Designer and Educator. Santoyo also taught with Bill Mollison in Australia and in the US. Larry received the Permaculture Community Service Award from the Permaculture Institute (Australia) for his pioneering work.

This event was held on two days with approximately 70 guests attending each day. It was very inspiring to see the diversity in backgrounds and ages of our guests. Permaculture is reaching out to everyone; from the typical young student to fathers and grandmothers.

Larry Santoyo makes permaculture easy and enjoyable to learn by combining the serious and technical aspects of the subject with great humor.

It was quite a treat to hear featured speaker Scott Pittman speak about his background and his over 20 years experience in permaculture. Hearing about his travels and r-evolutionary projects can make one very excited about what kind of world we will be living in.

Through the Permaculture series offered, the participants are not just taught hands-on techniques and sustainable design, but a new way of thinking from a broader perspective, a perspective that looks and works in balance with the entire ecosystem. Because every project is unique to its ecosystem, one must train the mind to look at the big picture in order to find solutions from nature.

We invite you to visit Larry and Scott's website (links above) for more information about permaculture and workshops. Also stay tuned for future permaculture workshops with Larry here at Project Butterfly.
